Shipping & Logistics

The work of the Technical Committee on Shipping and Logistics (SP TC) is centred on shipping practises and logistics including the port hinterland logistics. The operation of the SP TC is guided by the constitution to further the aimsn and objectives of the association.

It has become common knowledge that over 90% of the world trade is carried by sea. This makes seaborne trade a global instrument of development and hence particular interest to facilitation of trade. The rise of the globalisation concept and the rapid increase in world trade in the past decade have contributed to greater demand for international transport and logistics. The movement of goods have consequently induced the expansion of the maritime industry. The evolving role in shipping has exerted pressure on shipping lines. The pressure is characterised by the need to expand the geographical reach of shipping services and diversity in value added services. This has further led to integration of shipping and logistics services to address specific needs for consumers and producers in addition to competitive advantage

Merchant Navy officers form the core of shipping and practise. Goods and passengers being moved across the oceans require the expertise and experience of mariners to operate safely in the marine environment, ensure safety and timely delivery of goods and services in addition to the basic facilitation of trade globally. The TC avails a platform for interaction of mariners and shore side logistics and shipping professional. This creates the necessary ambience and atmosphere for constructive indulgence in shipping and logistics matters.

The membership is open to mariners, shipping experts and logistics professionals. Interested members with particular interest are encouraged to join.
